"“Seven Pounds” is his son Connor’s first film, but Tom Cruise opted not to attend the premiere in L.A. Dec. 16.

The reasoning for skipping 13-year-old Connor’s big-screen debut, in which he plays a younger version of Cruise pal Will Smith? Cruise opted to stay in New York to continue the publicity blitz for his film “Valkyrie.” “As you know, Tom and Will are great friends,” his rep Cheryl Maisel said. “Tom is in New York on a publicity tour for his movie.”

Dr. Drew from Celebrity Rehab and Tom Cruise

June 18, 2008 |16:19 | Gossips | Interviews  By : Team X

Dr. Drew, the psychologist/addiction specialist who runs the clinic on the TV show "Celebrity Rehab" said the following about Tom Cruise:

A lot of people in the public eye who behave strangely have mental illness we can learn from, and much of it is based on childhood trauma, without a doubt. Take a guy like Tom Cruise. Why would somebody be drawn into a cultish kind of environment like Scientology? To me, that's a function of a very deep emptiness and suggests serious neglect in childhood - maybe some abuse, but mostly neglect.
Now I could argue a lot of different points here. I'll stick to two since I got carried away in my first post.

First, yes, neglect causes mental illness. But folks, hello, let's not forget that there exists evidence (through twin studies) for a genetic susceptibility for bipolar disorder and other mood disorders. Scientists like James Potash of Johns Hopkins Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science are close to using the susceptibility genes to point to biochemical pathways of disease that could lead to development of new medications to alter those pathways. Let's not lose sight that mood disorders are organic illnesses -not make-believe conditions that happen to those who crack under stress.

Second, while I, for one, am not a huge Tom Cruise fan (Gee, I wonder why?), I don't think the fact that he is a Scientologist makes him mentally ill. Does this mean because I'm a fish-frying Catholic, I'm a nut? Some would say yes. (And, okay, I did say that Catholicism was the best religion for the mentally ill because of all the visions and stuff.) I'm uncomfortable with anyone saying that because a person follows a set of beliefs that, in effect, makes him a member of my very elite camp. To tell you the truth, I hope Tom Cruise isn't mentally ill ... because I don't really want to run into him at one of my "retreats." Especially if he's off meds. Yikes.

Tom Cruise is Bombproof

June 14, 2008 |15:30 | Gossips | Interviews  By : Team X

Just when you thought celebrity salaries couldn't be any more grossly inflated, Tom Cruise has found a new way to make you queasy. Apparently and by "apparently" we mean "In Touch says" Cruise is spending his dough in only the most supercilious places. Yes, just like the Pope (and most likely, Xenu), Cruise drives around in bullet and bombproof vehicles.

The 45-year-old Scientologist has a fleet of these cars and all are all unfortunately unbombable.

Dr. Drew vs. Tom Cruise

June 13, 2008 |16:01 | Gossips | Interviews | Scandals  By : Team X

Step aside, Brooke Shields and Matt Lauer Tom Cruise has a new celebrity to argue matters of mental health with.

Cruise's lawyer, Bert Fields, and Dr. Drew Pinsky of "Celebrity Rehab" are embroiled in a war of words over a remark Pinsky made in an interview with Playboy magazine, people.com reports.

In the interview, Pinsky speculated that "neglect" during his childhood may have led Cruise to join the Church of Scientology. Fields called Pinsky a "posturing flake" who "pretends to diagnose people he's never met," people.com reports.

Pinsky's rep countered that "under no circumstances is Dr. Drew making a blanket diagnosis about Scientology nor Mr. Cruise, whom he does not know. Dr. Drew was simply using Mr. Cruise as an example of someone who is recognizable to help the public understand."

But Pinsky also apologized to Cruise, again through his publicist: "Dr. Drew meant no harm to Mr. Cruise and apologizes if his comments were hurtful."

Tom Cruise Needs To Make Hardy Men

May 20, 2008 |13:10 | Gossips | Interviews  By : Team X

With his recent stint on Oprah, dining dates with Viacom honcho, Sumner Redstone, and talk of another Mission: Impossible movie on the way, Tom Cruise may be on the road to recovery. I'm okay with this. I find myself in the strange position of liking Cruise. I don't care about his couch antics or his religious beliefs. I like the guy's movies and I tend to like him in those movies.

Look, I grew up with Maverick. When he "killed" Goose, Mav went into the dumps. Nothing mattered to him. His flying was shaky; he lost his nerve. He blew off the sexy-in-a-baseball-cap Kelly McGillis. Not even playing with the boys in the hot summer sun, lathered in suntan lotion, could cheer him up. This is kind of where Cruise has been in the past two years in terms of his career. He hasn't been focused (see: Lions for Lambs, and possibly, Valkyrie). But maybe, just maybe, he's turning a corner.

The new Mission: Impossible movie is good news. His comedic cameo in Tropic Thunder is good news. His ability to not come off as a raving madman on Oprah is good news. But the best news is probably his rumored involvement in Hardy Men, a comedy that he would costar in with Ben Stiller (Cruise is also rumored to star in director Todd Phillips's comedy, Men).

The catch, of course, is he needs to be funny which is never the easiest of tasks. But enough directors have had success with Cruise in comedic moments. I don't know how broad a comedy Hardy Men will be, but one thing I do know is Cruise's success in comedy (and in a lot of his roles in general) comes when he plays cocky bastards.
